To mark a
document so that certain portions of it are
unreadable or
blacked out; used to
censor or
delete certain
released material which may be
sensitive, require deletion to protect
privacy, or (usually) to prevent the organization that
redacted the document from being embarassed.
Redaction is often done on United States Government documents which have been released under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.
