A resectoscope is a long thin telescope-like instrument which has at its tip an electrically activated wire loop. It was originally developed for inserting into (men's) urethra and treating prostate cancer; once in place, the loop is activated and the resulting electrical current burns away tumors. A resectoscope can also be paired with a hysteroscope and used in a similar way to treat (women's) uterine conditions such as infertility and fibroids.
