A material used in the restoration of teeth, ie a filling material. It is tooth-coloured, or better known as the proverbial "white filling".
Essentially a GIC (
need to see glass ionomer cements), with the addition of a resin component.
This is achieved be incorporating water-soluble
resin monomer into an aqueous solution of
polyacrylic acid. In this way, the system undergoes polymerisation of the resin monomer while the
acid-base reaction of the GIC continues simultaneously.
This was designed to produce favourable physical properties similar to composite resins while retaining the basic features of the conventional GIC. With the addition of the resin component, compressive strength, flexural strength, translucency and surface smoothness are improved. It is also less sensitive to moisture contamination during the setting reaction compared to conventional GICs.
