One of the scariest things a Dungeon Master can say to a roleplaying group.

Roll for initiative means that something is going down. The party has met with something and the roll will determine the order that they and the mystery guest will have when dealing with each other. Hopefully the tank will not get the highest initiative and start hacking at a full-sized red dragon like last time.

Depending on the gaming system in use, each person and the Dungeon or Game Master rolls a die. The person with the highest number goes first, followed by the next highest, and so on. From that point the character or creature that gets the first move can change the entire future of them all. Also, rolling for initiative doesn't mean that a fight is about to start. Negotiations and talks can be used instead. Unless it's a skeleton. Yeah, just kill that bastard and move on.
