Formerly the property of the Wicked Witch of the East, sister of the Wicked Witch of the West, until Dorothy Gale's house landed on her (quite accidentally) and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (actually the Good Witch of the South in the books) presented them to her for her journey. The shoes were eventually lost in one of the Deadly Deserts surrounding the Land of Oz when they transported the farm girl home to Kansas. What most people don't realize is that Dorothy's slippers were silver in the original book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, but were made ruby red for the classic film in order to provide better contrast in the colorized portions of the movie.
