Lo-Tech meets high-tech. Imagine a laptop that had mother of pearl inlaid around its screen instead of shitty quality plastic. Or with precious stones as buttons and switches, or industrial strength skateboard grip tape stuck to the base instead of dinky rubber feet, to stop the thing swilling around on your table. This is the idea of Sandbenders Inc, the fictional collective of tinkerers in William Gibson's "Idoru" and "All tomorrow's parties" - I was captivated by the idea that they would take some soulless piece of production-line electronica and turn it into something both functional and beautiful at the same time, real living working art.
