A NetHack scroll that is very similar to the scroll of enchant armor, not surprisingly. Uncursed, it adds +1 to the weapon you're currently wielding; the blessed version adds +3 and blesses it, and the cursed version adds -1. Enchanting much past +7 is probably inadvisable, as with the scroll of enchant armor.

Effects of the Venerable Scroll of Enchant Weapon
(in nethack 3.4x)

This item has been with roguelike games since way-back-when. One testament to what makes nethack a great game is how one simple item can be used in many, many different ways.

Following is a fairly complete list of uses for every adventurer's trusty papery companion, the scroll of enchant weapon:

Increasing the enchantment level of your currently wielded weapon

An uncursed scroll will increase your weapon's enchantment level by 1 point.

A blessed scroll will increase your weapon's bonus by a random number depending on its current enchantment level as follows:

  • -1 or less: 1 to 4 points
  • +0 to +2: 1 to 3 points
  • +3 to +5: 1 to 2 points
  • +6 to +8: 1 point (2/3 chance of destroying weapon as well)
  • +9 or higher: 0 to 1 point (2/3 chance of destroying weapon as well)
NOTE: If the your weapon was +6 or more when you increase its enchantment level, it has a 2/3 chance of evaporating and being lost forever. The highest "safe" level you can reach is +7, which happens 50% of the time when enchanting with a blessed scroll from +5.
NOTE: When wielding sets of items (mostly daggers, arrows, or other missiles), all of the items in the set will be enchanted together.

Decreasing the enchantment level of your currently wielded weapon
A cursed scroll will lower the bonus of your weapon by 1 point. This is often done unwittingly or accidentally, but sometimes is useful for achieving the maximum safe level of a weapon. If your weapon has reached +6, you can bring it down one level and try using a blessed scroll of enchant weapon to bring it up to +7. (see above)

NOTE: Artifact weapons will resist this effect.
NOTE:If the your weapon was -6 or lower when decreasing its enchantment level, it has a 2/3 chance of evaporating and being lost forever.
Uncursing a weapon
Reading a blessed or uncursed scroll will uncurse your current weapon if it happens to be cursed, in addition to increasing its enchantment level.

NOTE: A blessed scroll will not bless a weapon, nor will a cursed scroll curse one. This can be accomplished by dipping it into holy or unholy water, respectively.
Fire / Rust / Corrosion - proofing your weapon and repairing damage
If an uncursed or blessed scroll is read while confused, this scroll has a wild magic effect of protecting your weapon from erosion (burning, rusting, or corroding.) If the scroll has been eroded in any way, all of the erosion damage will be repaired.

If the scroll is cursed, then any erosion protection it has will be removed. (There is no known benefit to removing such protection.)

Changing a worm tooth into a crysknife (or vice-versa)
When using an uncursed or blessed scroll, if your weapon is a worm tooth, it will be turned into a unfixed crysknife. This is in addition to any other effects such as uncursing or increasing the weapon's enchantment level.

Using a cursed scroll will turn a crysknife back into a worm tooth in addition to decreasing its enchantment level. (There is no tangible benefit to this action.)

Fixing a crysknife
The wild (confused) effect (see above) of a blessed or uncursed scroll also fixes an unfixed crysknife if wielded.

NOTE: I'm uncertain if a cursed scroll will unfix a fixed crysknife. Message me if you've tried this!
Exercising your dexterity
Reading a blessed or uncursed scroll when empty-handed will excercise your dexterity. A cursed scroll will abuse your dexterity.

Got it? Now get out there and play some nethack!
