An Italian adagium which translates into something like: If it's not true, at least it's well invented. It's useful to properly justify those little deviations into the realms of poetic license, which make your tale / history / narrative sound better or more interesting.

Use with caution, as abuse will end up giving you a credibility problem with your audience.
