A person's first innocence comes of naivete' and ignorance, with trust in life and optimistic hope based on inexperience with disappointment and no world-wisdom. Next comes the loss of innocence, in which he or she turns distrustful, defensive or insecure, and cynical. Eventually, with long personal struggle and luck, a person may develop a second innocence, when full awareness of disappointment and human pettiness and fallibility can't stop his or her trust in life and hope.
