some of the world's largest and most active volcanoes (such as Kilauea and Mauna Loa) are of a type known as shield volcanoes. named for similarity of their shape to a warrior's shield, these volcanoes are formed when continual basalt lava flows pour from a vent which spreads out in all directions (sometimes great distances) from the vent, forming a gently sloping cone.
