A kind of fence built, usually in rural areas, to keep blowing snow off the roads.

A snow fence is usually built just to the north of roads. They are usually made of wood, though some plastic fences exist, as well as "living" snow fences made up of certain evergreen trees. The wood fences look like narrow picket fences with wire twisted around them, while the plastic fences look like very thick chain-link fences. They are designed to stop most drifting snow before they cover the roads.

Since they usually consist of a few dozen feet of isolated fencing, they are completely ineffective for keeping livestock fenced in.
