Short for "standard play"--the highest possible quality speed for standard VHS, offering two hours of recording on a standard videocassette. (Of course, for VHS, this isn't saying much.) As opposed to EP/SLP and LP speeds.

These impressive machines are built out of many SMP servers (2-way to 8-way depending on the model) linked together by a high speed, proprietary communication interface (the so called SP switch) to create a large distributed memory parallel computer.
