The sticky bit, or the t bit, is no longer useful for files. It used to mean that only one binary image of the file (assuming it to be an executable) would be in memory at a time, regardless of how many people were running said program.
For directories it means that even if the permissions allow users to remove objects from the directory, only the owner may do so.
