The two U.S. states of North Carolina and South Carolina. The cultures of the two states tend to run in northeast-southwest strips rather than following the state border: the mountainous western areas (called the "Up Country" in South Carolina), the "Piedmont" or "Midlands," and the coastal areas.

Pepsi has used the slogan "The Pride of the Carolinas" in these states to try and seem more local than its Atlanta competition, Coke. (As General Wesc says in his Pepsi writeup, they use an even more localized slogan as you get closer and closer to the location of its invention. The Carolinas slogan is probably for broadcast on TV and radio stations with an audience on both sides of the state line.)
