Perhaps it already has.
Inevitably, there are a bunch of crazy pundits around who start saying things like this without realizing that 1) it's painfully obvious and 2) if you were actually using it you wouldn't even care.
Of course the Internet will tranform society. Is that a good thing? I don't know.
