Glare

causes us to squint

evade our eyes;  look away

The late afternoon sun

slowing traffic yet

not quite low enough to make shadows

almost forgotten

it is an afterthought

a distant memory three hours after dark

The only lights then from slivers of moonlight

a few distant stars or

the flickering green and red of small airplanes

flying across the horizon at

low altitude

trailing only a low hum
