American (could be popular in other places, though) saying indicating that truthful statements are often unpopular with those who hear them. In particular, the sort of truth which especially hurts is the sort of truth which is bluntly stated, and/or appears to threaten the emotional well being of the hearer of the message. IMHO, the best thing to do when faced with a hurtful statement is either to deal with it or show why it isn't true in the first place. Typical responses, however, are begging the question, ad hominem attacks, and a host of other logical fallacies, combined in some ill conceived retort which only serves to strengthen the resolve of those who agree with the side which got it all wrong in the first place.
