In the third market, listed securities are traded over-the-counter by brokers who are not members of large exchanges such as the NYSE or Nasdaq. The third market generally refers to ECNs such as The Island ECN, REDI, Archipelago, and SuperMontage. ECNs have been successful in whisking away much of the market share held by the large exchanges.
