time and a half

Premium pay received for time worked in excess of a normal hours. Under most union contracts, time and a half is paid for:

• On any given day, time in excess of a standard eight hour shift, up to the twelfth hour (when double time kicks in); or
• In any week, any hours after the forty standard hours, up to sixty hours (again, when double time kicks in).

If an employee has a nonstandard work week (4x10 or 4x9+4), the numbers may shift a bit. Some contracts also specify that rather than waiting until 40 hours kick in, an employee who works on a day which is normally their day off gets time and a half on that day.
