A type of jet engine characterised by a large fan at the front of it ahead of the compressor section that is driven by the turbine section. Turbofans were developed from turbojet engines when engineers and designers realised that the fan would make the engine more fuel efficient, more powerful, and cleaner than straight turbojets.
