A pair of insulated copper wires twisted into a spiral pattern, originally designed for telephone service (POTS). The purpose of twisting the wires is to reduce electromagnetic noise.

Twisted pair wiring generaly comes in two forms, shielded twisted pair (STP) and unshielded twisted pair (UTP).
