The unknotting number is a knot invariant defined as the minimum, over every diagram of a knot, of the minimal number of crossings that must be switched to yield a diagram of the unknot.

This number is bounded above by half the crossing number.

The only knot with unknotting number 0 is the unknot; the trefoil has unknotting number 1.
