surface of the
ocean.
This ocean condition refers to cold nutrient-rich waters (chock full of organic detritus) beneath the thermocline that are drawn upwards to replace warmer surface waters displaced by strong surface winds. The nutrients brought up in the upwelling support the food chain for coastal marine life.
