Vaginal secretions should not be confused with vaginal discharge, which is usually icky, purulent, and probably an indicator of some sexually transmitted disease.

Vaginal secretions, the type which help lubricate intercourse, are often impaired in patients who have have chemotherapy, pelvic radiotherapy and in post-menopausal women who are not on hormone replacement therapy. This causes dyspareunia (pain during sex) from the lack of lubrication. Artificial, water-based lubricants (such as K-Y Jelly) may help in these cases.
