Rifles used for varminting, which tend to have long, thick bull barrels and often have composite stocks. Almost invariably the varmint rifle will have a high-powered scope, in the 6x-24x range, since varminting is often done (especially in the Western U.S.) over extremely long ranges, from 300 yards out to around 500 yards.

Varmint rifles are most often bolt action but some semi-automatic rifles are used including the Ruger Mini-14.

The most common calibers include 223, 243, 22 PPC, and the 17 Remington.
