Originally sold as a quack medical device in the 1920s and 1930s, the violet wand has been enthusiastically repurposed as a high-end sex toy. Several varieties of the wand exist on the market today, but all of them contain a Tesla coil which delivers a steady stream of low amperage, bright purple electricity that gives it its name. The electricity is mild and generally safe when applied to the lower extremities, but is still intense enough to appeal to BDSM enthusiasts, who typically enjoy expensive, elaborate, and potentially dangerous toys which come with a long list of stern rules (remove all metal from the body, never use it near the heart or head, etc.)
