An arbitrary geographical division of an area into smaller areas for the purposes of assigning which voters vote for which candiates. The area being divided is usually a municipal district, like a city. The division itself, sometimes at risk of gerrymandering, is often made by the chief potentates for the region--the very people elected according to the division of regions into voting precincts, like the City Council. There is almost always a one-to-one mapping between a voting precinct and a polling station.
