its black eyes examining the broken man below- hollowed bones creaked and snapped as the bird opened its jaw, warning

gripping the bark, he rose: glancing about, searching, he resolved to use the
tree to prop himself up. His legs weren't in working order yet, nor were his
eyes. He grimaced and exhaled

the small bird hopped toward the trunk of the tree, cocking its head sideways, skyward. there was no sun here, only a solid dull glow, the devolved form of sunlight. The fields rolled on for miles, void and beautiful

The man waited no less than a second after he felt the urge, his hand tore the air and his fingers bore deep into the small feathery life. He couldn't feel his body drop to the asphalt street as he shoved the bird into his mouth, itts cold flesh oozing intestines. His vision unfocused, obscuring the family running past, small metal nodes on their foreheads, regulating thoughts, ideas, vision. The city buildings around them looming over, observing.
Metallic police rolled through the street, splaying the family as they screamed and became one with the city. He couuldn't feel the city burning his eyes, the bujldings falling and crushing his legs. The bird's bones broke and splintered, its structnre turning to a mushy black and red pudding- this he coulld feel, this he loved.
