A zero insertion force package is a socket for mounting large chips like microprocessors, which allows insertion without risk of damaging the chip from excess force. A lever at the side is used to slide the pins in smootly and clamp the chip in place. By lifting the lever, the chip can be removed neatly without bending the pins.
