1 January - Europe: Germany initiates a program to develop a 4000-craft Luftwaffe within two years.

26 January - Europe: Poland enteres into a 10 year non-aggression treaty with Germany.

1 March - China: Henry Pu Yi is crowned emperor of Manchukuo.

10 April - Japan: Japan issues objections to loans from the US and Britain to China.

30 June - Europe: Hitler eliminates many of the SA's commanders in the Night of the Long Knives. Over 1000 people are assassinated.

July - Japan: Japanese Foreign Ministry announces a plan to invite 50,000 German Jews to settle in Manchukuo.

25 July - Europe: The Austrian Chancellor, Engelbert Dollfuss, is assassinated by the Nazis during a failed coup attempt.

2 August - Europe: Paul von Hindenburg, the President of Germany, dies.

3 August - Europe: Adolf Hitler merges the powers of President and Chancellor into a single office. All military personnel are required to swear an oath of loyalty to Hitler.

19 August - Europe: Hitler declares himself der Führer, "the leader" or "the guide".

18 September - Europe: The USSR is admitted into the League of Nations.

6 October - Europe: Three members of the right-wing CEDA party join the Spanish government. The leading socialist party, the PSOE, launches a short lived insurrection in protest, which is quickly, and brutally, put down by one Francisco Franco.*

1 December - Europe: A close comrade of Josef Stalin, Sergei Kirov, is assassinated, prompting the Soviet dictator to begin a new round of purges. 8,000,000 Russians will be exiled in Siberia or killed.

5 December - Ethiopia: Italian and Ethiopian troops clash just inside of Ethiopia, near the border of Italian Somaliland.

29 December - Japan: Japan formally withdraws from the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty. She is now free to commence the buildup of her navy.

30 December - Ethiopia: Italian dictator Benito Mussolini issues orders for the full conquest of Ethiopia.
