Region of southern Italy (roughly from ankle to heel on the Adriatic coast and the Gulf of Taranto), comprising the provinces of Foggia, Lecce, Bari, Brindisi, and Taranto. Sometimes also known in English under the name "Apulia". Largely agricultural - citrus fruits and bulk table wine - with the last three towns named above being major ports for connections to Albania and Greece in particular. Tourism is important in the Gargano peninsula to the north. Population around four million.
