A mundane foodstuff mentioned by Ivor Cutler in a humorous monologue, Gruts for Tea.

By extension and via Herring oikolect, the term has entered general use - admittedly not very widespread, but you can all play your bit - to refer to:

  • Breakfast cereals, particularly oats and muesli
  • Dry catfood (specifically, "cat gruts" or "catgruts")
  • Solid residues in liquids, particularly:
    • Yeast residue in live-bottled beers
    • Coffee grounds
    • Sugar deposits in wine
    • Anything that needs to be filtered out of home made items such as sloe gin.
