The name of title of one of the chief officials in the Roman Republic. At first there was only one Praetor, but little by little their number increased to 8.

The Praetores (the Latin plural), supervised the work of the courts, and the laws of the Republic (they watched that laws wouldn't cotnradict each other, for instance).

Praetores were also sent to important provinces to act as governors. the Praetores carried 6 Fasces as the sign of their office.
