A John Carpenter movie concerning the subtle takeover of a population by an alien race using subliminal messages which can only be viewed when using eyewear provided by the resistance group who has vowed to stop them.
This movie is the origination of the line "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I'm all out of bubblegum." Reportedly Rowdy Roddy Piper (who played the lead role) improvised this line during the filming of They Live. John Carpenter wanted Rowdy Roddy Piper to help promote the film and draw similarities between it and the Reagan administration but Piper refused claiming "I didn't want to get into politics. I never disliked Ronald Regan, he seemed like a nice old guy."
