Mummy is also a
British synonym for
mother, and in use is identical to the
American "mommy". Like mommy, the shortened version "
mum" can be used.
The fact that the words for "female parent" and "hideous embalmed corpse" are identical led to the following rubbish playground joke:
Q: Why was the Egyptian boy confused?
A: Because his daddy was a mummy.
