Chapter two in Global Brain by Howard Bloom. 1st ed. copyright 2000, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

This chapter covers the birth of eukaryotes, and, more importantly, multi-cellular life. By going multi-cellular, life on Earth gained personal adaptability, but it lost access to the world-wide web that bacteria (prokaryotes) were still using. Basically, while a single clam might be able to do more than a single bacteria, bacterial society is able to adapt to change more quickly and easily than clam society. This amounts to having a powerful intranet, with no internet access.

As a consolation prize, eukaryotes are granted the ability to have sex.
