There has been some
confusion since the introduction of the euro as regards the
plurals of the words "euro" and "
cent". A directive published by the
EU shortly after the currency's introduction instructed that on official documentation, the plurals of "euro" and "cent", in all languages, were to remain as the singular. This caused lot of
bother, particularly in Italy where stacks of documents had to be
shredded because they used the word "euri" as their plural for "euro".
In
Ireland, the
media formally use "euro" and "cent" as both singulars and plurals, but the use of "euros" and "cents" is widespread in
everyday language. Indeed, the word from
Europe is that there is no official plural for those words in any of the various EU
languages, and that the plurals will naturally take shape according to how each language's speakers evolve them.
