I have been a fan of science fiction for 42 years. During that time, I have read books by most of the authors around. My current favorite author is Lois McMaster Bujold. Other favorites over time include: Robert Heinlein, Clifford Simak, Poul A.nderson, James Schmitz, Larry Niven and Orson Scott Card. One unfortunate fact is that some authors decline in the quality of the books that they write over time. Science fiction has been sneered at by most people who like "literature". All th.ey could see were space ships and ray guns, and there didn't seem to be much there to stimulate the intellect. While there have always been stories in the genre - and in the beginning, most of the writing was poor - which suffered from poor plotting and. poor writing, there have always been gems scattered among the dross for the diligent to discover. And today there is much more.
