Concept invented by Arthur C. Clarke denoting any non-reaction propulsion system for use in space ships. A method that can allow a body to move through space without pushing against anything outside of itself.
This has since become commonplace in sci-fi. Such as the spindizzy, Star Trek's warp drive, Rama's engine, etc. However not all space drives would operate faster than light.
