The original star player for the then-"Mighty Ducks of Anaheim," a National Hockey League team. Kariya plays left wing, usually on the first or second line. Paul led the Ducks in total goals and shots during his time there.

Paul Kariya had been with the Mighty Ducks since 1993 (their first year in the NHL), when he was drafted onto the team, until he signed with the Colorado Avalanche prior to the 2003 season, where he was reunited with former Duck Teemu Selanne. Like everyone else in the NHL, Kariya sat out the 2004-05 season. When the lockout was resolved, he signed as a free agent with the Nashville Predators.
