Dorothy L. Sayers's 1923 novel and the first in which amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey appears and springs fully to life. The plot concerns a mysterious nude corpse found in an architect's bathtub while elsewhere a rich financier goes missing. The book's most interesting feature is a scene in which Wimsey suffers a shellshock-related episode (resulting from traumatic incidents experienced on the battlefield during World War I). Still vivid and readable with its details of life in the 1920s.
