Era of Good Feeling, the period from 1817 to 1824 when the Democratic-Republican was virtually the only party in the United States. President Monroe was re-elected in 1821 by 231 electoral votes out of 232 and some writers restrict the term to his second adminstration. Internal improvements and tariff questions broke up the harmony after 1824.
