dawn licked the edges of the sky
fraying them to an
ironic
midnight
blue.
ripples of fog-colored clouds
emerged from anonymity
just as the stars had done who flickered into being
hours before.
the remaining few dimmed
as dawn infused the sky
with its own, brighter light
relieving them from their watch
over the world.
morning confidently took her place
and the last protector of the night
slowly
blinked
out
as though falling asleep
tired from his night's
vigil.
