When the original bridge was built, it was the first bridge to be made out of steel in Portland. This earned it the name "Steel Bridge." When the current bridge was built in almost the exact same place, the name stuck.
It's worth noting that the Steel Bridge is the only place in the world where a boat can sail under a train that is traveling beneath a car that is driving below an airplane.
