Located in Fort Tejon, the Lebeck Tree has quite an interesting story to tell in the history of California. Not so much of the tree itself, but the man, Peter Lebeck, buried at its base. If you visit it today, you can see the tombstone erected in 1938. However, this wasn't his original marker, an unknown person(s) had carved the original into the Lebeck Tree, but the tree had grown over it and only after someone noticed some awkward markings in the tree. Its bark was stripped which later revealed to be the imprint from the original epitaph. The relatively unknown Lebeck now lives on as the near-by town of "Lebec."
