Founded in 1935 by Scott King in San Diego for business travelers to find a place to stay. King also coined his motel chain's name at that time, however, he didn't start using it for another 11 years. Interestingly the Travelodge mascot, Sleepy, was based on the state flag, the California Grizzly Bear.
