History/Info:

US 299 was decommissioned during the California Route Renumbering following AASHTO's rule that a US highway has to cross at least 2 states. It was redefined as SR-299, which is pretty much just the same thing. Interestingly, SR 299 goes a little beyond US 299's original end in Alturas, to the Nevada state border where the road abruptly becomes a dirt road signed as a Nevada state highway.
