A variety of acoustic guitar, invented in America in the 19th century. It is hypothesized that this instrument was inspired by the banjo, but its lively sound is very distinctive from that of the banjo, or the classical guitar's authoritative, mellow warmth.
Some notable practitioners of steel-string guitar are Elizabeth Cotten, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Leo Kottke, and many others.
