Anthony Trollope

Biography

Anthony Trollope was an English novelist born in 1815. His great popular success meant that few critics of his time recognised his literary merit. His most popular books are those written about the imaginary county of Barsetshire; The Warden (1855), Barchester Towers (1857), Doctor Thorne (1858), Framley Parsonage (1861), The Small House at Allington (1864), and The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867), but he also wrote many books about political life such as the Palliser novels. In these political novels he is less concerned with political ideas than with the practical working of the system, something he had personal knowledge of, standing for parliament in 1868.

Trollope was schooled at Winchester College and Harrow, experiences which he did not enjoy. He worked for several years for the Post Office before being transfered to Ireland where he married Rose Heseltine in 1841. Trollope's final years were spent in a small village in Sussex, where he worked on despite diminishing popularity, failing health, and increasing melancholy. He was in London when he died in 1882, having been stricken while there with paralysis.

N.B. Tiefling tells me that Trollope was one of the major developers of the post box.

Style

A popular British author, who realistically described the Victorian world, Trollope wrote in his autobiography that the novelist's task is "to make his readers so intimately acquainted with his characters that the creation of his brain should be to them speaking, moving, living, human creatures.". Since the 1970s, Trollope has begun to receive much academic acclaim both as a moralist and as the developer of the chronicle form of fiction.
