LRE is a major component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA. According to U.S. law, students who have disabilities have to be educated in regular classroom settings as often as that environment is beneficial for them. Today this process is generally called “inclusion” and greatly helps the child with the disability to develop social skills by allowing for interaction with other disabled and non-disabled students. Levels of inclusion vary, again, depending on the needs of the child—not on the needs of the school.
